Washington, DC (SportsNetwork.com) - Troy Brouwer scored the game-winning goal with just 12.9 seconds to play and the Washington Capitals nabbed a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2015 Winter Classic from Nationals Park. The game appeared headed to overtime, but a mid-ice faceoff was won by the Capitals and Alex Ovechkin brought it into the Chicago end down the left wing. Ovechkin had his stick broken at the left circle and lost control of the puck, but Brouwer was there for a turnaround shot that beat Corey Crawford for the lead. Braden Holtby then sealed the victory with a tough save on a Patrick Kane shot just before time expired to give the Capitals their second victory in the New Years Day event. Washington had won a 3-1 decision over the Penguins at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh in 2011, and is now the first team to win two games at this annual event. Ovechkin finished the game with a goal and an assist, while Eric Fehr also lit the lamp for the Capitals, who had come into the game having lost two of their last three games. Holtby finished the game with 33 stops. Patrick Sharp and Brandon Saad scored for the Blackhawks, who have lost both of their Winter Classic appearances as the team dropped a 6-4 decision to Detroit at Wrigley Field in 2009. Crawford made 32 saves.
. The 55th-ranked Austrian saved five of the eight break points he faced and converted three of his 12 chances to defeat the Spaniard in 2 1/2 hours. Granollers, ranked 40 places above Thiem, was granted a first-round bye at the clay-court event.
. Rookie sensation Jorge Soler had two doubles in his home debut for the Cubs and Jacob Turner (5-Cool won in just his second start for Chicago after being acquired from Miami last month.
. Replay backed him up. Adeiny Hechavarria immediately followed the ruling with a go-ahead sacrifice fly for the Miami Marlins, who held on to beat the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Sunday completing a three-game sweep.
. The 2005 Paris champion won five straight games in the first set to rally from a 3-1 deficit, hitting 12 winners to only three for Verdasco. Berdych then broke the Spaniard twice for a 5-2 lead in the second set but wasted four match points to let Verdasco level at 5-5.
. At a news conference ahead of Wednesdays game against Rennes, Blanc said he will sign a new contract "when were champions," adding "its a matter of principle" not to sign anything before the title has been won. MIAMI -- The Miami Heat signed free-agent forwards Josh McRoberts and Danny Granger on Monday, and brought back incumbent point guard Mario Chalmers. All three deals were agreed to previously, but not signed until the Heat had more pieces of their salary-cap puzzle put into place. McRoberts signed a four-year deal that will pay him $5.3 million next season. Chalmers got a two-year deal that will have him earning about $4 million next season. Granger also has a two-year deal and will make just over $1 million next season. McRoberts averaged 8.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists for Charlotte last season. Heat President Pat Riley said McRoberts was one of Miamis "main targets" in free agency. "We are delighted that this multi-faceted player will help us immensely," Riley said. Chhalmers has been with Miami for all six of his pro seasons, helping win two championships.dddddddddddd He averaged 9.8 points and 4.9 assists last season and shot 38 per cent from 3-point range. "Its great to have Mario back," Riley said. "Were happy that he wants to continue his career in Miami, hes one of our core players, and I believe he will have a great season." Granger has appeared in 556 career NBA regular-season games and averaged 17.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists. Hes been bothered by injuries for most of the past two seasons. "One of our main priorities this off-season was obtaining a proven veteran like Danny with All-Star experience," Riley said. "We expect him to be a multi-position player and have a very successful season in our system."
