There are certain truths that will never change with Roy Williams. He collects timeouts like some people collect stamps and baseball cards, and he will push tempo and play man to man defense until the end of his coaching career.

The Hall of
Fame head coach will also never put much stock in the location his team’s play, especially when it comes to postseason tournaments. His aggressive scheduling year in and year out – look no further than North Carolina’s 22 Quadrant 1 games, which were five more than the next closest team nationally Texas – prepares his players for most every environment, which eliminates the atmosphere factor and allows them to focus instead on what actually matters.

And so Williams’s annual tradition of downplaying proximity to Chapel Hill or any potential homecourt advantage was on display during his radio show on Monday night. The Tar Heels open NCAA Tournament play against West Region No. 15 seed Lipscomb on Friday at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, N.C. UNC is 11 0 all time in NCAA Tournament play in the Queen City and 33 1 all time in the state of North Carolina.

“You’ve got to play on game day,” Williams said. “It doesn’t make any difference. I still remember one year when I was at Kansas they had us penciled in to the Final Four because the regional was in Kansas City. Last year, they had Kansas penciled into the Final Four because the regional was in Kansas City.

“It didn’t work for us when we were there and it didn’t work last year for Kansas. You’ve got to play on game day. I’ve never had a building win one game for me and I’ve never had a building lose a game for me. We’re going to have to play.”

UNC and Lipscomb will tip off at approximately 2 45 p.m. on CBS.

Were your players running on fumes against Virginia having played four games in four days?
“No. I just thought we didn’t play welcomel, and Virginia had something to do with that. We missed some shots. We didn’t guard as welcomel as we wanted to. They sort of controlled the tempo of the game. Theo was a playmaker in the other games and they backed off him. He was 1 of 10 and they took away some of the things that he does really welcomel, getting other people involved. Luke was our only scoring option for a huge part of the game. They’re really good.”

On subbing the five starters out after they fell behind Miami, 14 0, in the ACC Tournament semifinals
“That was me being stubborn
, too. I wouldn’t have called a freakin’ timeout if we had been down 1,000. Just to make everybody else mad. I’ve always said I’ve never seen a game won [in the opening minutes]. One time at Kansas we had someone 19 0 in our building and they had the last shot and could have tied the game. So I’ve never gotten too excited or too depressed. I was mad at the way those five guys were playing, so instead of calling a timeout and wasting my throat and jumping and screaming at them, I decided just to take them out and let them sit there. When I put them back in, I told the other five, I said
, ‘Guys, don’t worry, because if they go out there and screw it up like they did the first time, I’ll put you guys right back in again.’”

Do you have an injury update on Cameron Johnson?
“His body is beaten up a little bit, but with yesterday off and today off, if we had practiced today, I think he would have practiced at least part of the practice. Hopefully with shootaround and the things we’re doing tomorrow he’ll feel better.”

Luke Maye was named second team Academic All America. He’s the 15th Tar Heel to earn those honors and the third in the last eight years.
“Second team is fantastic
, but I’m sitting here saying, you mean there’s five guys in the country that have better credentials than him? No. There are not five guys in the country, so that’s my beef.”

Did you consider fouling Duke in the final seconds while having a three point lead?
“It was out of bounds with 11 seconds to play. I think that’s way too early. I always say five or six [seconds], something like that. So I told the guys, ‘if they dribble it up and there’s five or six, we’ll go ahead and foul, but don’t foul anything close to a shot.’ And so then he took a shot and it was not a good shot and Theo got the rebound. Now we’re shooting, so I told Theo, ‘finish it, finish it, knock the free throws in and give us a five point lead.’ So while the referee handed Theo the ball, I called Joel and Kenny over and I said, ‘Now, if he misses both of these, foul in the backcourt, just don’t tell Theo I told you that.’”

What’s your schedule for the week and how do you go about getting your guys ready for Friday afternoon?
“[Tuesday] we’ll have a weight session and on the court run and shoot and then in the locker room watching tape. I go recruiting tomorrow afternoon and evening and get back late [Tuesday] night. Wednesday morning we’ll practice at 11 o’clock and then pack up and get ready to go down to Charlotte in time for dinner down there. Thursday we’ll have a practice at another facility away from the public and then we go in and do 30 45 minutes in front of the public Thursday afternoon and then tee it up on Friday and see what happens.”
