ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Terry Francona has been an extremely good fit for the Indians. His players seem to feel the same way, considering the way theyve been contending for a post-season berth. Justin Masterson pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer and Cleveland completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a 3-1 victory Wednesday. "Weve got guys in here that want to be in the playoffs, and were working our butts off to try and get there," Swisher said. The Indians, who began the day 5 1/2 games behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central and 3 1/2 behind Oakland in the race for the second wild card spot, improved to 69-58 and surpassed last seasons win total with 35 games to spare. "Im enjoying myself," said Francona, who guided the Boston Red Sox to a pair of World Series titles. "I thought this was the right place -- I knew it was -- and its been everything I hoped it would be. I love the people I work with. Im enjoying this team and trying to see if we can get better together. Its been fun." Masterson (14-9) allowed a run and five hits over 6 2-3 innings, tied a season high with five walks and struck out seven just 10 days after giving up five runs over 4 1-3 innings against the Angels at Cleveland in his shortest outing of the season. The right-hander, who made his big league debut against the Angels in April 2008, is 4-0 with a 1.87 ERA in nine career starts against them. "It wasnt easy. I mean, you look up in the fourth inning and I think Justin had more balls than strikes," Francona said. "But he had good movement and he kind of bobbed and weaved through their lineup. He only had probably one inning where he really cruised." The Angels put the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the seventh before Masterson fanned Erick Aybar with his 110th and final pitch for the second out. Rich Hill came on and retired Josh Hamilton with a tremendous assist from third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall, who robbed the Angels slugger of a hit with a diving stop in the hole and threw him out. "I feel a little disappointed that I only went 6 2-3 innings, because the goal is to get as deep as I can," Masterson said. "I had some good movement early in the game, got a lot of ground balls and got some great defensive plays behind me." The Indians got an insurance run in the ninth when Mike Aviles scored on Dane De La Rosas second wild pitch of the inning. Cody Allen pitched a scoreless eighth for Cleveland and Chris Perez got three outs for his 20th save in 24 attempts. The Indians bullpen had a 1.29 ERA and stranded 24 of 25 inherited baserunners during the teams 6-3 road trip. Jerome Williams (5-10) yielded two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks. The right-hander is 0-8 with a 6.79 ERA over his last 12 starts and his only victory at home this season came in a 12-0 rout of Seattle on May 21. "Everybody was tired today, and it would have been an easy day to just show up," said Francona, who used nine pitchers in Tuesday nights 14-inning win. "We need to get wins like this." The Angels scored in the sixth when Hamilton led off with a single and came all the way around on Hank Congers one-out double into the right field corner. Los Angeles put runners at the corners in the second and fourth innings, but Masterson escaped the first jam with a strikeout of Peter Bourjos and the second on a flyball by Andrew Romine. "His ball was moving pretty welcomel and was obviously sinking," Bourjos said. "We had some opportunities to blow the game open early, but we didnt take advantage of it." NOTES: Romine started at 2B for Angels for the first time this season in place of Howie Kendrick, who has missed 15 games because of a hyperextended left knee. ... Indians DH Jason Giambi doubled in the second inning, putting him within two hits of 2,000. ... Masterson, who became a full-time starter in 2010, reached the 1,000-inning mark for his career when he fielded Bourjos leadoff bunt in the fifth and threw him out. Bourjos had a bunt single in the seventh, ending an 0-for-21 drought. ... ... The Indians are 42-39 since May 23, the last time they led their division. ... Cleveland LF Michael Brantley, who broke Rocky Colavitos franchise record of 212 consecutive errorless games by an outfielder in Mondays series opener, has committed only six errors since beginning his big league career in 2009. ... Swisher has two hits in nine career at-bats against Williams, both of them homers.

.It will be carried by 3,000 people during its 41-day journey to the Games, and astronaut Chris Hadfield has been named as the first honorary torchbearer. What a thrill, Hadfield told a cheering crowd that included Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Olympic athletes and officials from the Games organizing committee.
. Riley Cooper (ankle), Jeremy Maclin (hamstring) and rookie Jordan Matthews should all line up when head coach Chip Kelly goes to a three wide receiver set when the Eagles host the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third preseason game Thursday night.
. It was Wozniaks second defeat at Roland Garros by a world No. 1 after going out a year ago to then-top player Caroline Wozniacki. "Ive got to bring my game up a notch at the key moments," said Wozniak, who marked a personal anniversary in Paris.
. The average annual value of the deal is $4.833 million. "Justin has proven to be among the best young defensemen in the league as confirmed by his selection to the U.INDIANAPOLIS -- Atlantas Mike Scott hit Indiana with the first 3-point barrage Monday night. The Hawks defence staggered the Pacers with some late stops. Now Atlanta is heading home with a chance to deliver the knockout punch to the Eastern Conferences top seed. Scott scored all 17 of his points during the Hawks incredible second-quarter run, and the defence fended off the Pacers frantic fourth-quarter charge to hold on for a 107-97 victory and a stunning 3-2 lead in the first-round series. "We can play with this team," Scott said. "Theyre a great team, especially at home, great players, great coach, but we have a belief in ourselves as welcomel." Why not? All the Hawks have to do is protect their home court and they will reach the second round for the first time since 2011, and throw the East into disarray after the talk all season was about an Indiana-Miami rematch in the conference finals. That looks like a long shot now. The Pacers havent won consecutive games with their regular starters in the lineup since mid-March and the leagues best regular-season home team (35-6) has inexplicably given away home court advantage to the Hawks -- twice. Theyre making it look easy, too. Atlanta shredded one of the leagues top defences during a remarkable second quarter, making 13 of 16 shots overall and 9 of 11 from beyond the arc. Scott made all five of his 3s during the decisive 30-6 run, which actually started with the final basket of the first quarter, to turn a 21-18 deficit into a 48-27 lead. Indiana never recovered. Atlanta outscored the Pacers 41-19 during that 12-minute stretch, matching the second-highest second-quarter scoring total in the franchises post-season history. The Hawks scored 41 against Detroit on March 17, 1986, and the St. Louis Hawks had 45 against Fort Wayne on March 14, 1957. Indiana, meanwhile, allowed a second-quarter franchise record, breaking the previous mark of 39 points set by Boston on April 23, 2005. The Hawks joined the 1970 Milwaukee Bucks as the only road teams in the shot-clock era to score at least 40 points in a quarter and give up fewer than 19. Not enough? Atlanta tied an NBA record with 9 3-pointers, most recently done in 2008, and also broke the franchise playoff record for 3s in a game with 15. The previous mark was 12. "I didnt even know," Kyle Korver said after making two 3s in the second quarter and another late in the game to keeep the Hawks in control.dddddddddddd. "Mike got hot. I dont know how many 3s he hit in that quarter. Mike hadnt shot the ball as welcomel as he did tonight, but he hasnt shot that welcomel all series." Shelvin Mack led the Hawks with 20 points, while Paul Millsap had 18. The Pacers, meanwhile, endured yet another bleak chapter in a second-half collapse that could go down as the worst in NBA history -- if they lose either of the next two games. And it was downright dismal. Roy Hibbert finished without a point or a rebound for the first time in his playoff career. Indiana was outrebounded for the first time in the series and its rebuilt bench was outscored 45-23. Paul George led the Pacers with 26 points and 12 rebounds. George Hill, Lance Stephenson and David West all had 16 points, not quite enough to rally on a night they were again serenaded with boos in the first half. "It was frustrating because we didnt make a change," George said of the Pacers defence. "We let them run the same action, the same shot. We didnt do nothing. So that was frustrating." The game changed in a hurry. Atlanta opened the second quarter with a free throw from Mack to tie the score at 21. Scott then made four consecutive 3s to push the lead to 33-21. Mack followed that with a midrange jumper, Korver made a 3, Scott scored on a putback and Korver hit his second 3. Mack followed that with two free throws and Scott closed the run with his last 3 of the game to make it 48-27. The Pacers still trailed 61-40 at halftime and by as many as 30 points in the third quarter before the frantic comeback. Indiana cut the deficit to 85-67 late in the third and with the crowd urging them on, the Pacers made it 96-87 on C.J. Watsons layup with 4:04 to go. But Korver answered with a 3 and the Hawks closed it out at the free throw line. "We dont do much for moral victories, we just dropped the ball," West said. "Everybodys got to be ready to play and I didnt think we responded welcomel enough." Notes: The Pacers had a moment of silence to honour former coach Jack Ramsay, who died Monday at age 89. Ramsay led the Pacers to the first NBA playoff win in franchise history. ... Atlanta has three wins at Bankers Life Fieldhouse and is the only team to beat Indiana on its home court more than once this season. ... The Pacers are 0-10 in series when trailing 3-2.
